Unusual antique Victorian folding armchair in the manner of George Hunzinger, dating approximately to the late 19th century.

This highly decorative chair features an elaborate turned wood X-frame/folding construction with numerous ring-turned elements and brass button accents. Particularly striking are the wonderfully carved dog-head arm terminals, each with nicely detailed facial features and carved fur.

One of the best features is the chair’s wonderful old circus-themed needlepoint/needlework upholstery in a faded red ground. The seat and back are filled with whimsical period-style imagery including a circus elephant, horses and riders, performers, costumed figures and other entertaining scenes. The unusual textile gives the chair tremendous character and makes it especially appealing as a decorative Victorian statement piece.

The folding understructure is equally interesting, with multiple intersecting turned stretchers and pivoting joints reminiscent of the elaborate mechanical furniture associated with George Hunzinger. No maker’s mark has been located, however, so the chair is being offered as Hunzinger style rather than attributed to Hunzinger.

Measurements: approximately 36” high × 23” wide × 19” deep.

Estate fresh antique condition with an attractive old surface. The wood shows expected scratches, finish wear, small losses and other signs of age and use. The antique circus needlework upholstery has considerable age-related wear, including holes, tears, fraying and losses, particularly around the front portion of the seat. Despite the wear, the wonderful circus imagery remains quite striking. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.
