Circa Approx 1870s. … Read more This Really is a Great Looking & Quite Scarce Antique American Blue Decorated Stoneware Liquid Storage Jug. Circa Approx 1870s. NOTE That it was Originally Sold at the Historic and Well Documented Downtown Portland Maine Merchant KENDAL & WHITNEY. This Large Business Establishment Was Known to Sell a Variety Items that Included Agricultural Implements, Machinery, Garden, Field & Flower Seeds, Fertilizers, Wooden Items and in This Case Apparently Stoneware Etc.

It is Rendered in a Very Desirable Small 1 Gallon Size. It has a Classic American Salt Glaze Exterior with a Hand Decorated Blue Stylized Flower Design. The Front is Embossed "KENDAL & WHITNEY - PORTAND Me". These. Smaller Size Jugs were Commonly Used to Store a Variety of Liquids - Spirits - Liquor - Ciders - Vinegar - Spring Water Etc. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use.

It is in Very Good All Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. It is Strong and Sound with No Damage & No Repairs. There is Some Slight Color Variation to the Glaze and a Couple Very Faint Surface Glaze Only Hairlines at the Back Handle and Upper Surface Area both being Kiln Glaze Imperfections That would have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. These Types of Surface Imperfections are Quite Common as These Types of Stoneware Items were Fired in Multiple Batches in Large Size Kilns.
