Sourced in Northern Italy, the plate measures approximately 9.125 inches (23.2 cm) in diameter and weighs a substantial 468 grams.

The front is restrained and elegant, with a shallow well surrounded by a broad rim finished with a finely molded reeded or gadrooned outer border. This subtle architectural detail gives the plate considerably more decorative presence than a plain pewter trencher and is characteristic of European tableware influenced by late Baroque design.

The reverse carries an especially interesting triangular arrangement of three historic touchmarks. The lower shield incorporates a prominent “X” quality mark together with the date 1708, while the two upper marks appear to include a maker’s or master’s device and a civic or heraldic emblem.

Importantly, the 1708 date appears to refer to the pewter quality standard or guild regulation represented by the stamp rather than necessarily to the exact year this individual plate was made. Comparable Saxon pewter continued to carry X/1708 quality marks later in the 18th century.

The crowned or quality “X” was used in European pewter traditions as an indication of a higher-grade or harder pewter alloy. The combination of quality, maker, and civic-style marks strongly suggests manufacture within the German-speaking Continental pewter tradition, possibly Saxon or a related regional center.

Below the touchmarks is a beautifully executed later hand-engraved inscription dated “21 Septbr. 1857” or similar. Whatever the precise occasion, the addition of a dated 19th-century inscription gives the plate an appealing second chapter in its history and indicates that it remained valued and retained long after its original manufacture.

The pewter has developed a rich dark silver-gray patina with scratches, utensil marks, oxidation, and surface variation accumulated through generations of use. It has been left unpolished, preserving the historic character of the metal.

A particularly appealing piece for a collector of early Continental pewter, or as a standalone decorative object displayed upright on a shelf, hutch, or gallery wall.
