Chinese Export Famille Rose Porcelain Oval Platter with Precious Objects, Circa 1765–1775
Qianlong Period, Circa 1765–1785
A Chinese Export porcelain oval platter of the Qianlong period, painted in the famille rose palette with a still life of “precious objects,” the treasures of a Chinese scholar’s studio. At the center a baluster vase, mottled in iron-red and gilt like veined stone, holds a full pink peony and a slender wand hung with pendants and a red cross-shaped ornament. Two blue ruyi scepters, the emblem of wishes granted, lie at its foot; a covered tripod censer stands to one side and a stemmed dish of yellow fruit to the other, with a pair of linked rings, yellow streamers and sprays of roses and chrysanthemum scattered around them.
The wide rim is hung with swags of green vine and pink roses beneath a fine iron-red and gilt husk border at the gilt edge, a Neoclassical framing of the 1770s for a thoroughly Chinese subject. Porcelain of this kind was potted at Jingdezhen and enameled in Canton for the Western table, and the oval form is the European meat dish supplied from Western models.
The shallow oval shape and pale ground make it an easy piece to live with. Set it on a stand along a dining room sideboard or a console in the hall, lean it in a plate rack in the kitchen, or hang it as the anchor of a wall of blue and white and famille rose, where the pinks, iron-red and touches of gilt work with traditional and modern rooms alike. It also earns its keep at the table for fruit or cheese.
