This pair of large Chinese export famille rose dishes was painted at Jingdezhen in the late Yongzheng to early Qianlong years, when the new pink-based palette was at its freshest and finest. Each dish is centered with a gnarled flowering prunus tree, its branches hung with white blossom, two full-blown peonies in rose and ruby enamel with yellow hearts and a clump of bamboo rising at the right, all set within a wide border of shaped cartouches in pink lattice, sepia seeded and turquoise trellis diaper with sprays of peony between them. The pink of the border is the true famille rose pink that gave the palette its name, and the well and rim are finished with gilt lines.

At 12 1/2 inches across, these are dishes to be seen. Hang them as a pair on either side of a mirror or above a console, stand them on a mantel against a soft green or lacquer-red wall, or bring them to the table as the centerpiece of a chinoiserie dinner. The pink and turquoise border sits happily with English country furniture, painted Gustavian pieces or a clean modern room that wants a single burst of eighteenth-century color. In Chinese tradition the prunus, peony and bamboo stand for renewal, prosperity and resilience, a pleasing combination for a dining room or entrance hall.
