Handcrafted in … Read more A wonderfully evocative American Bar Harbor-style wicker reclining lounge chair dating to the early 20th century, circa 1905–1920.
Handcrafted in natural rattan and woven reed, the chair features an unusually elaborate herringbone-patterned seat, back and armrests accented by narrow turquoise-blue/green woven stripes. Wrapped rattan legs, stretchers and supports create the lightweight but remarkably sophisticated structural framework characteristic of high-quality American wicker furniture of the period.
The most distinctive feature is the chair's adjustable reclining back. Period metal hardware positioned along the rear frame allows the back to be set at several angles, transforming the chair from an upright armchair into a relaxed deck or veranda lounger.
Its combination of decorative weaving and ingenious mechanical construction reflects the golden age of American wicker furniture, when elaborate rattan furnishings became fixtures of summer houses, resort hotels, porches and verandas from New England to the great coastal retreats.
The natural honey-colored surface has developed a particularly attractive aged patina, while the contrasting colored reed remains visible throughout the woven decoration.
A wonderfully sculptural piece even when not in use—the chair has exactly the relaxed elegance associated with turn-of-the-century Bar Harbor, Adirondack and American summer-house interiors.
