White II Memorial Fund commemorative scarf dating to the early years of America’s space program. Created following the death of astronaut Edward H. White II in the Apollo 1 tragedy, this patriotic red, white and blue scarf features diagonal bands incorporating facsimile signatures of NASA astronauts.

The original sewn label reads: “100% Pure Silk – Made Exclusively for the Edward H. White II Memorial Fund – Made in U.S.A.”

According to published auction records, only 200 examples were produced for an astronaut wives’ fundraising luncheon. This scarf is accompanied by a handwritten provenance note stating that the 200 scarves were presented at a 1968 luncheon benefiting the Edward H. White II Memorial Fund.

Edward White became the first American to walk in space during the Gemini 4 mission in 1965. He later died alongside astronauts Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee in the Apollo 1 command-module fire on January 27, 1967.

A scarce piece of NASA, Gemini and Apollo-era history with particular relevance to Houston and the community surrounding the early American space program.

Approximately 32 inches x 31 inches. Made in the USA of 100% pure silk. The astronaut signatures are printed facsimiles incorporated into the design and are not individually hand-signed. See less
