An exceptionally decorative pair of japanese gold imari porcelain vases, hand-painted in arita, japan, circa 1960s. Both pieces retain their original “gold imari – hand painted” marks to the underside. Each vase measures approximately 30 cm / 11.8 in. High and 19 cm / 7.5 in. In diameter and weighs approximately 2.5 kg / 5.5 lb., giving the pair an unusually substantial and representative presence. The decoration is particularly attractive. A luminous yellow ground is combined with deep cobalt blue, turquoise, emerald green, soft pink, iron red and delicate gilt accents. Large shaped reserves feature beautifully rendered exotic birds surrounded by flowering branches and lush blossoms. Further floral motifs are distributed across the yellow ground, while the cobalt neck and stylized green leaf border around the base create a highly balanced composition. The quality of the hand-painted decoration is especially evident when viewed closely. Individual brushwork, softly graduated colors and small variations in the painted outlines give the surfaces a depth and vitality that is very different from the flatter, more standardized appearance often associated with later or contemporary decorative porcelain. The colors remain remarkably vivid and give the pair an exceptionally fresh appearance. Their strong proportions and richly colored decoration make these vases highly representative decorative objects. At nearly 12 inches high, they have sufficient presence to work beautifully on a console, sideboard, mantel or large table, either in a traditional interior or as a colorful accent within a more restrained contemporary setting. Finding two corresponding gold imari vases of this size, decoration and overall quality as a pair is considerably less common than finding individual examples. Displayed together, their mirrored visual presence emphasizes the symmetry and richness of the design and makes them particularly suitable for sophisticated interior decoration. A striking and highly decorative pair combining traditional japanese porcelain craftsmanship with the confident color palette that made gold imari especially desirable for the international decorative arts market during the mid-20th century.
