Found in a tucked-away antiques shop in the Netherlands, this large 1949 Royal Delft platter is a particularly beautiful example of traditional hand-painted Delft Blue.
Made by De Porceleyne Fles, the historic Delft pottery known today as Royal Delft, the unusually shaped platter centers on a wonderfully atmospheric Dutch maritime landscape. Traditional sailing vessels move across calm water beneath a softly clouded sky, their cobalt sails reflected below, while a windmill rises almost quietly from the distant shoreline.
The painting is what makes the piece. Pale blue washes build the sky and horizon before giving way to increasingly saturated cobalt across the sails and rippling water. The central landscape is framed by an elaborate arrangement of traditional Delft floral ornament, with smaller scattered motifs carrying the decoration across the softly aged ground.
At 16 inches across, it has enough scale to stand alone on a wall, mantel or plate rack rather than reading as a small collectible plate.
The reverse bears the characteristic hand-painted De Porceleyne Fles factory mark incorporating the apothecary bottle, JT initials and Delft, together with additional production markings and the BT year code. Royal Delft’s historical records identify BT as 1949. The factory notes that its hand-painted pieces have been marked using this system since 1879.
Measures 16” wide, 12” tall and 1” deep.
In very good vintage condition with uniform overall fine crazing that gives the glaze a beautifully aged surface. Minor age-related marks, surface wear and small manufacturing/glaze irregularities are visible. No obvious chips, cracks or repairs observed.
