The green-band pieces are considerably harder to find than later versions of Birds of Britain, and the Magpie is an especially elusive motif in the full dinner-plate size.

The plate depicts the Magpie (Pica pica) perched among flowering branches, rendered in the beautifully detailed naturalistic style for which the collection is known. The design is based on the historic bird illustrations of E. Donovan, 1794, and was adapted for Portmeirion by Susan Williams-Ellis.

Crafted in England in Portmeirion stoneware and measuring approximately 10½ inches in diameter. The reverse bears the Birds of Britain Portmeirion backstamp.

A particularly desirable piece for the serious Portmeirion collector and an increasingly difficult plate to source, especially in the original green-band series. Also striking displayed individually or incorporated into a collection of English botanical and ornithological ceramics.

Its timeless naturalist imagery makes it especially well suited to coastal, cottage, rustic, English country, traditional, and collected interiors, whether displayed decoratively or incorporated into a layered table setting.
