This night light is modeled in the Grotesque form of a seated tusked pig-like figure wearing a vivid green jacket and holding an elaborate, shield-shaped porcelain plaque decorated with painted florals and surrounded by gilt leaves. The pig-like figure has expressive facial features, and a long projecting nose. The square base is painted in green and white with gilt accents. This piece comes in four parts- the teapot lid, the head, the body, and the square base. Russian porcelain of the 19th century was celebrated for imaginative historicist designs, elaborate gilding, and colorful painted decoration. This Veilleuse or night light was a practical yet decorative form that was designed to accommodate a small candle or other heat source.
