The vessel is beautifully proportioned with a rounded globular body, gently flared neck, low foot and concentric horizontal bands encircling the shoulder and body.

The surface has developed extensive fine craquelure, glaze wear and areas of exposed pottery consistent with considerable age. Interior deposits and firing evidence on the underside further contribute to its archaeological character. At just 7.25 inches high, it is an especially appealing small-scale example of an ancient Chinese form.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
The survival of the fitted domed lid is an important feature of this piece. Ancient pottery vessels are frequently encountered without their original covers, which were inherently vulnerable to separation and breakage over centuries of burial, excavation, handling and ownership. Here, the cover follows the restrained rounded profile of the vessel beautifully and retains the same aged amber surface and exposed earthenware visible elsewhere on the jar. Whether displayed as an archaeological object or incorporated into a collection of Chinese ceramics, the presence of the lid gives the vessel a particularly complete and satisfying silhouette.
