The museum's Book and Gift Shop focused on items tied to American folk art, outsider art, self-taught art, and related crafts.

The museum was frequently praised (including as a "Best Museum Gift Shop" by New York magazine around that era) for offering authentic or folk-inspired pieces rather than mass-produced design goods like those at the neighboring MOMA Design Store. Retail director/buyer Marie DiManno sourced many items by traveling the country. One of which is the Christmas themed bird house. It's a little joyful part of Folk Art history.
