This exquisite circa 1860s French Sèvres porcelain jewelry box is a richly decorated example of Rococo Revival design from the Napoleon III / Second Empire period. With its deep cobalt-blue ground, elaborate raised gilding and romantic painted scenes, the box has the luxurious decorative character associated with 19th-century French porcelain.
The unusually shaped body has a softly scalloped and bombe-style profile, giving the box a sculptural appearance from every angle. Its intense royal-blue porcelain surface is covered with intricate gilt scrollwork, floral motifs, lattice decoration and ornamental borders.
The lid is centered with a large colorful pastoral scene depicting elegantly dressed figures gathered in a romantic countryside setting. Smaller painted landscape reserves decorate the sides of the box, each surrounded by elaborate gilt cartouches. The combination of figural painting, landscape decoration and densely worked gilding gives the piece exceptional visual richness.
The box retains its original-style metal mounts, including the hinged construction and decorative front clasp. Opening the lid reveals a contrasting cream-white glazed porcelain interior with naturally developed craquelure visible throughout, consistent with the age of the piece.
The underside bears a painted Sèvres mark, adding further interest for collectors of French porcelain and 19th-century decorative arts.
