Rare 18th Century Italian Neoclassical Writing Desk in the style of Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814). Maggiolini was a celebrated Milanese cabinetmaker whose extraordinary marquetry furniture became synonymous with the height of Italian Neoclassical craftsmanship. The desk is constructed over a walnut substructure and extensively decorated with intricate marquetry and overlays of multiple contrasting and rare woods. The rectangular top is framed by handsome geometric veneer work, while the front is arranged around a central frieze drawer flanked by two cupboard doors. Directly above the center drawer is a concealed pull-out writing surface, providing a convenient extension for writing while maintaining the desk's elegant, compact proportions when retracted. The drawer and doors are embellished with geometric borders, scrolling foliage, classical urns and portrait medallions rendered in contrasting woods.
In modern interiors, this desk is ideal as an executive desk or writing table, an elegant console, or an entryway piece. The desk will make an extraordinary contrast piece in a modern or contemporary room where its marquetry can become the focal point. It will complement Parisian, Italian, English Country, Neoclassical, Traditional, or Transitional interiors. This remarkable example of 18th century Milanese cabinetmaking combines the disciplined architectural elegance of Neoclassicism with the technical virtuosity of Maggiolini-style marquetry. This writing desk is as much a work of decorative art as it is a functional piece of furniture.
