A late 19th century French school desk with integrated bench, sourced in Provence, France. Constructed entirely as one continuous piece, the desk retains its original painted surface and a richly distressed patina developed through decades of use. The long communal writing surface is divided into three hinged sections, each opening to reveal storage compartments beneath for books and writing materials. An original ceramic inkwell remains inset into the desktop beneath its hinged cover, with traces of old ink still visible. The desk is particularly compelling for its untouched character. Layers of faded pale salmon-pink paint are complemented by exposed wood, old inscriptions, ink and paint marks, scratches, worn edges and historic repairs. The long integrated bench displays equally expressive wear, giving the entire piece an authentic and highly decorative surface. Structurally revised with repairs as needed while preserving the original paint, distressed patina and historic character. A wonderfully evocative piece of late 19th century French school furniture, combining sculptural scale, functional storage, an integrated bench and an exceptional original painted surface.
