A striking vintage four-panel Chinoiserie folding screen featuring an elaborate landscape of phoenixes, flowering foliage, stylized clouds, bamboo, and botanical motifs against a luminous silver-tone ground.
The principal side is dominated by a dramatic pair of long-tailed phoenixes rendered in warm shades of rust, gold, green, and muted red. The birds are surrounded by peonies and other flowering plants, a sculptural tree, rockwork, bamboo, and scrolling clouds. The reflective silver-tone background gives the composition remarkable depth and changes character beautifully as the surrounding light shifts.
Each panel is framed in black with additional hand-decorated Asian-inspired animal and bird motifs along the borders. The reverse is also decorated, featuring individual botanical compositions against a black ground, allowing the screen to be attractively displayed from either direction.
Brass-tone hinges with decorative finials join the four panels, while coordinating metal caps protect the feet.
At approximately six feet tall, the screen has substantial architectural presence and works beautifully as a room divider, decorative backdrop, or freestanding work of art.
