An exceptional and rare early 19th-century English Staffordshire pearlware (or ironstone) mask jug, dating to circa 1820–1830. This striking piece features "The Duenna" pattern, a celebrated theatrical motif inspired by Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s famous 1775 comic opera.
The jug is beautifully molded with a classic octagonal paneled body and an expressive, hand-painted bearded mask spout. It features a rich, deep cobalt blue ground heavily decorated with vibrant polychrome enamels showcasing floral sprays and theatrical figures in period attire. The interior rim is similarly decorated with an intricate multi-colored floral and geometric border. Commonly attributed to early Staffordshire masters such as Reuben Johnson of Hanley or Lockett & Hulme.
The pitcher measures 5 inches tall.
