An unusual antique slant-front writing desk on a carved tripod pedestal stand, dating to the 19th century, circa 1820–1860.
The compact upper case opens to reveal a remarkably complete fitted writing interior with symmetrical pigeonholes, four small shaped drawers with brass ring pulls, and a central locking compartment. Two full-width drawers below provide additional storage.
The desk is distinguished by its decorative brass hardware, including engraved handle backplates and shaped escutcheons. The case rests on a handsome turned and spiral-carved pedestal terminating in three sweeping cabriole legs with carved foliate feet.
Constructed of mixed woods with a deep reddish-brown finish, the desk retains considerable evidence of age and use. The richly worn surface, old scratches, shrinkage, craquelure and variations in finish give the piece considerable character.
A particularly appealing small-scale antique desk with a sculptural silhouette, equally suitable as a functional writing desk or as an accent piece in a library, living room, bedroom, guest room or entry hall.
