This exceptional 19th-century Crown Staffordshire “Ye Olde Willow” porcelain cake plate is a particularly charming and unusual example of the enduring English fascination with the classic Willow pattern. Dating to approximately the 1880s, the plate combines traditional transfer decoration with beautifully executed hand-painted details and areas of thick applied decoration, giving the design considerably more texture and dimension than typical transferware examples.
The distinctive square-form plate features gracefully shaped sides and integrated handles, framing a wonderfully colorful Asian-inspired landscape. Pagodas, bridges, rocky mountains, trees, water, a small boat, and birds create an intricate central scene, while the turquoise geometric border is punctuated by rich cobalt-blue reserves with colorful floral decoration. Vibrant greens, blues, yellows, and reds stand beautifully against the creamy white porcelain ground.
Adding considerably to its appeal is the Tiffany & Co. retail mark, indicating that the piece was retailed through the celebrated luxury house. This desirable association, combined with its early date, unusual form, and richly detailed decoration, makes it a particularly appealing find for collectors of Crown Staffordshire, English porcelain, Willow pattern wares, and antique Tiffany retailed objects.
Measuring approximately 10 inches wide, 9 inches deep, and 0.50 inch high, the plate has enough presence to display beautifully on a cabinet, sideboard, plate stand, or gallery wall. Good antique condition with no cracks or chips. Light surface wear, please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Its combination of vivid color, intricate craftsmanship, English porcelain history, and the prestigious Tiffany & Co. retail connection makes this a sophisticated decorative object with tremendous visual appeal.
