Antique Federal Windsor Splat-Back Armchair Vermont or New York, 1820's
New York or Vermont, circa 1820-1840's
An exceptional example of early American craftsmanship, this antique Federal-era Windsor armchair dates to circa 1820–1840 and hails from the regional workshops of either Vermont or upstate New York. Marrying the structural utility of traditional Windsor design with the refined sensibilities of the Federal period, the chair features a beautifully shaped, rare splat back accented by delicate geometric cutouts. The sculptural arms curve elegantly outward, supported by crisp, turned spindles that lead down to a deeply contoured thick pine plank saddle seat. Raised on raked, turned legs united by H-stretchers, this piece showcases beautiful primitive geometry. Finished in a historic, deep ebonized surface that emphasizes its historic silhouette, this armchair possesses a commanding graphic presence. It is a striking accent piece perfectly suited for modern minimalist spaces, rustic historic homes, or curated interior design projects seeking authentic American character.
Size: 19" wide, 15" deep, 32" tall, and a 16 1/2" seat height.
Condition: Presented in well-loved antique condition, this piece showcases a heavily aged, deep refinished historic dark surface with an exquisite patina. Structural repairs consistent with its 200-year history are present, including old breakout wood repairs along the perimeter and grain lines of the plank seat. These historic stabilization repairs remain solid, secure, and structurally sound for functional decorative use, serving to preserve the authentic narrative, character, and integrity of this early American treasure.
