Antique Black-Painted New England Banister-Back Side Chair, Circa 1750s
A charming 18th-century New England banister-back side chair, dating to circa 1750s, with a beautifully aged black-painted surface. The chair features a shaped and scalloped crest rail, five finely turned back splats, and elaborately turned front posts topped with distinctive bulbous finials. The simple, vernacular form is beautifully complemented by the layered, timeworn paint surface, which reveals warm red and brown undertones throughout.
The chair has been thoughtfully restored for practical use while retaining its early character. The feet have been restored and tipped out to return the chair to its original height, and the seat has been replaced. The result is an early chair that can be comfortably used without some of the concerns associated with putting an unrestored 18th-century chair into everyday service.
An exceptional decorative and functional accent for a country house, traditional interior, or collected room. The beautifully worn surface and sculptural turned elements make this an especially appealing example of early American vernacular furniture.
Thoughtfully restored for practical use while retaining its early character. Sturdy and service ready.
