Overview & Connoisseurship:
In over fifty years of handling, cataloging, and collecting some of the finest pieces of early American and indigenous folk art, this monumental feast-scale bowl stands as an absolute treasure. Spanning an oversized 17 3/4 in diameter, virtually every square inch of the surface displays continuous, swirling-dense knots, bird eyes, and complex marbled figuring.

What might appear to the novice eye as irregularities or wear are precisely the hallmarks that establish this bowl's rarity and authenticity.

Centuries of Honest Domestic Wear: Lathe-scribed shoulder turnings have been worn down unevenly along raised-contact areas from centuries of manual lifting and domestic use.

Untouched Dry Surface: Viewed from above, the interior basin remains in a pure, unvarnished state. It retains a dry, chalky, matte surface with honest period knife marks and historical domestic residue—completely free of modern lacquers, boiled linseed oils, or re-staining.

Nearly Three Centuries of Unaltered Patina: The richer, warmer amber tone across the sides and underside is the result of natural contact burnishing—developed slowly over nearly three centuries of handling in the manner of tumbled river stone.

Period Make-Do Wire Repair: An early structural make-do repair stabilizes a natural drying check at the rim. Secured with period hand-drawn wire, the dark, indelible oxidation halos sinking into the wood pores represent authentic iron-tannate staining that only centuries of wood-to-metal contact can produce.
