A vintage American Shaker-style bentwood sewing box, circa 1980s, hand painted with stylized tulips, scrolling foliage and latticework in rich teal, orange, green and ochre against a deep blue-green and black ground.
The traditional bentwood form opens to reveal an unusually well-finished interior, fully lined in small-scale floral cotton with quilted padding to the base and underside of the lid and coordinating green gimp trim. The exterior is signed by the decorative artist, whose identity remains unknown.
A distinctive example of the American folk-art and traditional craft revival, equally appealing as a decorative box or for storing sewing notions, jewelry and keepsakes.
