Here is a wonderfully sculptural vintage Indian bench, hand-carved from solid hardwood and featuring four dramatic elephant heads extending from each corner. Each elephant is beautifully modeled with a curled trunk, carved eyes, ears and tusks, and a rounded back that integrates into the substantial rectangular seat.
Deeply incised geometric carving surrounds the perimeter of the seat and continues along the apron, creating a wonderful contrast with the smooth central panel and highlighting the rich natural grain of the wood. The warm reddish-brown finish has developed beautiful variation and character with age.
Exceptionally substantial and quite heavy for its size, this is a beautifully crafted piece with wonderful presence from every angle. At 38 inches wide, it works beautifully as an entry or accent bench, at the foot of a bed, or as a sculptural piece of functional art.
