This is a bronze hare or long ear rabbit in the style of Japanese bronze rabbit figures that have been crafted since the Meiji Period and continue through the 20th century, reflecting the cultural significance of rabbits in the Japanese art and folklore. The rabbit symbolizes good fortune, longevity and cleverness in Japanese tradition, making these sculptures popular decorative objects.
Sometime in the 1990's the artisans in Beijing attempted to make bronze sculptures of Japan. It was a costly project and was discontinued after a short time. This rabbit sculpture was an example of the successful venture. It is well made , in the right proportions, almost lifelike. The eyes are soulful, the ears are long and the body nice and plump. It is a beautiful addition to a rabbit collection or simply a decorative object.
