This is a lovely pair of antique hand-painted porcelain picture frames, dating to the late 19th century, with wonderfully ornate Rococo-inspired forms.
Each frame features an oval opening surrounded by elaborate molded scrollwork, floral decoration, and generous hand-applied gilt highlights. One is decorated with delicate blue-gray flowers and foliage, while the companion frame has soft lavender and purple blossoms. Their slightly different decoration gives them the charm of a collected yet beautifully complementary pair.
The backs provide particularly nice provenance: one is hand-inscribed “F. Dickinson, June 1895,” while the other bears a Lechner, Vienna, Austria retailer or maker’s mark. The porcelain shows expected age and wear, including losses and rubbing to the gilding and surface patina, adding to their authentic antique character.
A beautiful and unusual pair of Austrian/Viennese porcelain portrait or photograph frames, perfect for displaying small antique photographs, silhouettes, or miniature works of art.
