Antique Japanese Santa Claus figure, circa 1930s, with a hand-painted composition face and hands, woolly cotton beard, red felt coat, fabric trousers, molded black boots and an original bottle brush tree. Made for the prewar Christmas export market, the figure has the expressive hand-painted features and mixed-material construction associated with early Japanese holiday figures.
Santa measures approximately 8.5" high and retains wonderful period character, from his pointed red cap and black belt to the small tree tucked beneath his arm. His softly aged materials and wonderfully expressive face make him especially appealing displayed among antique ornaments, on a feather tree, or incorporated into a mantel or holiday vignette.
The figure is not freestanding and displays best leaning against a tree, wreath or other support.
