This antique chest … Read more An impressive Italian Baroque four drawer chest, with robust carvings and sculptural ornamentation, from the 18th century. This antique chest from Italy features a façade is framed by dramatic carved figural caryatid-style supports at the front corner side posts with cascading foliate motifs, and pendant garlands that beautifully flank the four drawers housed within. Dentil molding adorns the underside of the top edge. Separating each drawer is a deeply carved rope and scale-pattern molding, lending rhythm and dimension to the chest's design. The lower apron features an exuberant scrolling motif with deeply cut carvings. The chest is presented on substantial bracket feet, with stylized acanthus leaves and paw carved feet. The wood has a lightened finish, and a creamy/taupe custom trim color enhances the richly textured surface. As expected for a piece of this age, the chest exhibits wear consistent with over two centuries of use, including surface rubbing, finish losses, age cracks, some stains at top, and evidence of a board at backside being replaced. This late Baroque period chest from Italy is a substantial and highly decorative statement piece, offering both generous storage and display of talented craftmanship, making it equally suited for grand traditional interiors, European country homes, or sophisticated eclectic spaces.
