An iron-red dragon winds among chrysanthemums, peonies and flowering foliage, with touches of gilt throughout. The small baluster-form vase is flanked by two gilt Buddhist lion-mask fixed-ring handles and finished with a gilt rim and decorative border at the foot.
At just 6" high, it is a finely detailed small-scale example of late Qing, circa 1880–1900, decorative porcelain.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Small Chinese porcelains can be an excellent entry point for a beginning collector, and this vase offers an unusual amount to study in just six inches. The turquoise ground, en grisaille painting, colored enamels, iron-red dragon and unusual mask-and-ring handles bring together several distinctive elements of late Qing porcelain. Particularly appealing are the two applied Buddhist lion masks, each holding a fixed porcelain ring through its mouth. Together with the hand-painted decoration and naturally worn foot, they give this diminutive vase considerably more interest than its scale might suggest.
