A wonderfully glamorous vintage Lady Buxton jewelry box, dating to the mid-century era, circa 1950s–1960s. Finished in warm metallic gold with a small curved brass-tone handle, the exterior is wonderfully understated — but the real magic is inside. Lift the hinged lid and the box opens to a creamy satin-lined interior decorated with delicate gold scrollwork, giving it the feel of a dressing table accessory from another era. Beneath it sits an extraordinarily well-organized system of individual jewelry compartments. The upper tray lifts completely out using two petite metal handles, revealing a second full compartmented level underneath. Between the two trays are dozens of individual spaces in varying sizes, designed to keep rings, earrings, brooches, bracelets, watches and necklaces separated rather than tangled together. Marked Lady Buxton on the back.
It is exactly the sort of beautifully over-engineered personal accessory associated with mid-century dressing rooms and vanity tables — made for a time when costume jewelry collections were large, dressing tables were elaborate, and even storage was meant to feel glamorous.
Lady Buxton jewel cases of the 1950s and 1960s became known for their surprisingly elaborate interiors and generous organization. Period Lady Buxton advertising even promoted the abundance of velvet-lined compartments and storage as part of the experience of owning one.
This particular example has an especially satisfying two-level removable tray arrangement, making it as useful today as it is decorative. Styled on a vintage vanity, dresser or dressing table, it has that wonderful old-Hollywood feeling of opening a box filled with brooches, cocktail rings and strands of pearls before an evening out.

There are some shallow indentations and marks to the top, along with areas of wear and small chips to the gold leatherette-style covering, particularly around the edges and corners. The interior also shows some light age-related discoloration and spotting. We actually think the wear gives this piece quite a bit of character, and importantly, the box remains very usable with its trays, compartments and interior organization intact. less
