A mid-century Galliano Ferro pulegoso Murano glass bowl, created in Murano, Italy, during the 1960s, in subtly olive-green glass with a sculptural square form. The substantial bowl combines a softly squared outline with deeply indented lobes, creating an undulating profile that changes considerably according to the viewing angle. Rounded depressions worked into the underside interact with the thick glass walls, producing areas of optical distortion and magnification throughout the form. The glass incorporates the pulegoso technique, distinguished by the multitude of irregular bubbles suspended within the material. Pulegoso glass is produced by introducing substances into the molten glass that generate gas during the making process, creating a deliberately aerated structure of bubbles rather than the clear, homogeneous body conventionally sought in glassmaking. The resulting inclusions scatter and refract light, giving the glass a textured, almost effervescent appearance. Here, the pulegoso bubbles range considerably in scale and density, extending through the pale olive-green glass. Their irregularity contrasts with the smooth polished surfaces, while the sculpted indentations further manipulate the passage of light through the thick body. Pulegoso is particularly associated with twentieth-century Murano glass and is valued for the visual depth and textural character it brings to otherwise transparent or translucent forms. The combination of controlled asymmetry, substantial glass and deliberately entrapped bubbles gives the bowl a distinctly sculptural quality while retaining its function as a decorative bowl or centrepiece. Very good condition, with no chips or damage present. Very minor surface wear to the polished base. Dimensions: Height 7 cm / 2.76 in.; width 17 cm / 6.69 in.; length 17 cm / 6.69 in.
