Outstanding quality antique Victorian mahogany eight bell musical grandfather clock by Winsor Bishop of Norwich, having a magnificent architectural mahogany case and an impressive eight-day musical movement striking on a gong and playing on a choice of eight or four bells.
The impressive mahogany hood has an elegant carved swan-neck pediment terminating in carved rosettes, with an arched glazed door flanked by reeded columns with finely gilded Corinthian capitals. Both sides of the hood are fitted with large decorative pierced brass fretwork sound panels, allowing the sound of the substantial musical movement to project from the case.
The spectacular dial has an ornate brass face with decorative pierced gilt brass corner spandrels and a beautifully engraved silvered chapter ring with applied gilt Arabic numerals. The centre retains the original hands and subsidiary seconds dial, while the arch incorporates a further silvered dial allowing the musical movement to be selected between eight bells and four bells. The dial is signed “Winsor Bishop, Norwich.”
The substantial eight-day movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong and plays on eight or four bells at the quarters, half-hour, three-quarter hour and hour. It is complete with three original weights, pendulum and key.
The beautifully proportioned mahogany case has a long moulded trunk door flanked by reeded pilasters with brass capitals and bases. Below is a moulded panelled section leading to a substantial plinth base. The rich mahogany has developed a wonderful warm colour and patina, complemented beautifully by the gilt brass detailing throughout.
A magnificent and imposing Victorian musical longcase clock of exceptional quality, standing an impressive 240 cm high. The combination of the elaborate eight-bell musical movement, finely detailed dial, pierced brass sound frets and handsome architectural mahogany case makes this a particularly decorative example.
