A wonderfully decorative French armchair—the deep sapphire-blue velvet against the warm, time-softened wood gives this one considerably more personality than the usual Louis XVI revival chair.
This elegant French Louis XVI-style fauteuil dates to approximately the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910. The carved wood frame features a gently shaped upholstered back, open arms with upholstered armrests, a broad serpentine-front seat rail, and classic tapered and fluted legs.
Particularly attractive are the carved floral rosettes positioned above the front legs and the restrained molded decoration throughout. Rather than an overly formal gilt finish, the exposed wood has developed a warm, softly aged surface that works beautifully with the rich deep blue velvet upholstery.
The upholstered back, generous seat and padded armrests are finished with traditional nailhead trim. The reverse retains a contrasting fabric panel, consistent with traditional upholstery construction.
It is a handsome example of the Louis XVI Revival / French Neoclassical tradition and has exactly the versatility that makes these chairs useful today: sophisticated enough for a formal living room or bedroom, yet relaxed enough to work as an occasional chair beside a contemporary desk, console or small table.
