The decoration is particularly well executed, combining strong cobalt outlines with softer washes, stippling and detailed feather work that gives the birds and vegetation wonderful depth and movement.

The rounded shoulder is finished with a bold scrolling border, while the fitted lid repeats the blue-and-white decoration and is topped by a pointed finial. The decoration continues around the body, revealing different birds and botanical elements from every angle. Presented on its carved dark wood display stand. An especially decorative example for a mantel, console, bookcase or collection of Chinese blue and white porcelain.

JUNE'S THOUGHTS
What caught my attention about this jar is the quality and variety of the painting. It isn't a piece with one attractive "front" and an unimportant reverse—the decoration continues around the body, revealing different birds, bamboo, flowers and foliage as the jar is turned. On its wood stand it has enough scale to stand alone, but it would also be wonderful worked into a larger collection of blue and white porcelain.
