Caltagirone has been a major ceramic center for centuries. Planter features a dark-skinned head with elaborate jewelry and fruit in the traditional Sicilian Moor's-head form. The crown, berries, lemons, leaves, and projecting ornaments are deliberately theatrical and three-dimensional.
