The dramatic open balloon back is framed by graceful curving uprights and crowned with a deeply carved dimensional rose surrounded by scrolling foliate ornament. A coordinating carved lower back rail continues the floral and scroll motif, while the shaped apron and cabriole-style front legs add to the chair’s distinctly romantic Victorian profile.

The upholstered seat is particularly lovely, worked in a traditional floral needlepoint design with burgundy, rose pink and golden-yellow flowers surrounded by green foliage and scrolling ornament against a warm neutral ground. Decorative trim finishes the upholstered edge.

The combination of carved walnut, floral needlepoint and the open balloon-back silhouette gives this chair wonderful presence without feeling visually heavy. It would be beautiful used as an occasional or accent chair in a bedroom, dressing room, entry, library or sitting room, or as a distinctive desk or vanity chair.

The chair retains the character expected of an antique piece, including variations and wear to the wood finish. Evidence of older repairs/joinery is visible at the upper portions of the balloon-back frame. The underside also shows evidence of previous upholstery work.
