A wonderfully decorative pair of antique French walnut armchairs combining grand, architectural silhouettes with fresh, newly installed floral upholstery.
Each chair features a tall, gently arched upholstered back, generously padded seat and deeply carved scrolling arms. The curvaceous supports continue into cabriole-form legs joined by the distinctive undulating os de mouton, or “sheep’s bone,” stretcher associated with French Louis XIII and early Louis XIV furniture.
The chairs have been newly upholstered in a lively coral-ground botanical textile depicting oversized flowers and foliage in soft shades of cream, celadon, blue and brown. Antique-brass nailhead trim provides a tailored finish, while a complementary neutral fabric covers the reverse of each back. The warm, time-softened walnut frames balance the colorful upholstery beautifully.
Impressive without being overwhelmingly formal, these chairs would make splendid fireside seating, host and hostess dining chairs, library chairs or dramatic additions to a bedroom or entry hall. Their tall backs give them tremendous presence, while the cheerful fabric makes them feel fresh and remarkably current.
