Each aquatint is pencil signed by Fabio Baldan and marked P/A (Prova d’Artista / Artist’s Proof) beneath the image. The paper also bears Baldan’s embossed BF monogram seal.

Baldan was a Venetian engraver known for preserving the traditional art of aquatint using historic techniques and materials. According to the original artist literature accompanying this pair, Baldan worked in this specialized medium for more than 30 years, taught graphic techniques at the Academy of Fine Art in Venice, and exhibited his work in numerous art exhibitions. His aquatints were produced in small runs, with the accompanying literature noting that an average complete run consisted of fewer than 70 examples, from which the artist selected the finest impressions to sign and number.

Aquatint is an exacting intaglio printmaking process in which a metal plate is prepared with finely ground rosin and repeatedly treated with acid to create delicate variations of tone. Baldan’s accompanying documentation describes his use of individual colors applied to the plate by hand before each impression was pulled, resulting in subtle variations from print to print.

Presented as a pair in ornate antiqued gilt frames with beautifully aged surfaces that complement the warm sepia and terracotta tones of the engravings. The generous white margins and diminutive scale of the images give the pair an elegant Old World quality.
