The … Read more A striking mid-20th-century Japanese lacquerware coaster set featuring six individually decorated coasters housed in their original coordinating lidded box. The rich vermilion-red lacquer is accented with stylized Japanese landscapes in gold, black, silver and red, depicting torii gates, temples, pine trees, mountains, sailboats and waterside scenes.

Each coaster features a different scenic composition, while the cylindrical lidded box is decorated with a larger Japanese landscape and finished with a glossy black interior. The underside bears an “NTS / Made in Japan” mark.

The set has particularly interesting family provenance. It belonged to one of the early generation of female officers in the U.S. Navy. A college graduate and Naval officer, she later lived in Japan with her husband, a U.S. Navy admiral, likely during the 1950s.

Dating to approximately the 1950s–1960s, the set is a wonderful example of mid-century Japanese decorative lacquerware. Equally appealing displayed on a bar or cocktail table, the coasters remain functional while the original lidded box makes the complete set especially decorative.

Vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear and small areas of loss and chipping along the edges of several coasters, as shown in photographs.
