A wonderfully characterful pair of 17th century Yorkshire oak backstool chairs, retaining the wonderfully dark, mellow surface that makes early English furniture so compelling. Each chair has a tall architectural back with an arched crest, shaped lower edge and pointed finials, above a broad plank seat and richly turned front legs and stretchers.
Their slightly individual surfaces, old wear and irregularities give the pair the feeling of furniture that has genuinely lived for centuries rather than pieces restored into anonymity. The compact proportions make them particularly versatile today: wonderful on either side of a small English chest, positioned against the wall of an entry hall, pulled up to a country dining table, or used as occasional chairs in a library or bedroom.
The losses along the front right corners of the seats are visible evidence of age and use and, in this context, feel entirely appropriate to the honest character of the pair. Their strong silhouettes and almost-black oak patina would be especially good against pale plaster, patterned textiles, old rugs and layered artwork.
