This substantial antique carriage side lamp dates to the late Victorian/Edwardian horse-drawn transportation era and retains the distinctive architecture of an original spring-fed candle lighting system. The square lantern body features three glass panels, a silver-tone reflective interior, red rear signal lens, exterior mounting bracket, ventilated upper crown, and a long hollow lower housing connected to the candle chamber. The lower section would have accommodated the candle-feed mechanism that maintained the flame at the proper height as the candle burned.

Clear glass panels remain present and show expected scratching, haze, residue, and age-related wear. Red rear signal lens remains installed. Exterior carriage mounting bracket and adjustment hardware remain present. Interior candle fitting unscrews, revealing the internal passage/tube leading downward into the long hollow lower housing. Lower cylindrical housing retains an opening at its base and appears to be part of the lamp's original spring-fed candle mechanism, rather than an electrical conversion. The removable internal spring/candle-carrier assembly itself was not observed and may be incomplete or missing. Upper structure retains ventilation openings consistent with heat exhaust from candle operation. Sold as a historical decorative/collectible object only; functionality has not been tested, and it is not represented as suitable for active illumination. Please review all photographs closely for exact condition and surviving components. less
