About This Piece
A Rare Fulham Pottery Artist-Signed Bowl (Adler Ware Period)
This exceptional sculptural bowl is a rare, hand-signed Fulham Pottery piece from the William John Marriner / Adler Ware period, dating from the mid-20th century (c. 1930s–1950s).
The underside carries a clear Fulham Pottery London impressed mark alongside a hand-scribed artisan signature, indicating limited-batch production rather than factory-line ware. These signed examples are far less common and are highly prized among collectors of early British studio ceramics.
The elongated scalloped body, twin handles, and unglazed matte cream finish reveal the influence of the sculptural forms popularised during the Constance Spry floral design movement. Fulham Pottery was known to produce vessels for Spry’s school, and many pieces from this era exhibit the same dramatic silhouettes intended for her pioneering asymmetric arrangements.
This bowl is an outstanding example of that tradition, elegant, architectural, and quietly monumental.

Provenance & Historical Context
Fulham Pottery (London, est. 1684) is one of Britain’s oldest and most historically important potteries.
Under William John Marriner, the pottery produced a celebrated series of sculptural forms known as Adler Ware, characterised by matte surfaces, bold silhouettes, and artisanal finishing.
During the 1930s–1950s, these forms overlapped with the rise of the Constance Spry School of Floral Art, which championed unglazed, architectural vessels for experimental floristry.
Artist-signed Fulham pieces from this era are documented, scarce, and increasingly desirable in the collector market.
