This is an absolutely stunning and eye catching fully functioning Louis XVI period cartel clock made by Corlet A Reims(1736-1798). The clock is signed by the clockmaker both on the dial and inscribed in cursive on the clock movement in the back. The original mercury gilding had been cleaned and it glows and gleams. The dial is 100% original and has never been restored. The clock has a 7 day reserve. That means the clock can we fully wound and keep time relatively accurately for 7 days. The clock chimes on the hour the number of times for that hour, and chimes once on every hour. The left key hole winds the mechanism. The right key hole winds the chime, and the top center key hole is used to adjust the length of the pendulum for accurate time keeping.
This is honestly a museum quality masterpiece. The sound of the pendulum ticking is so charming. I love hearing it in my home and my guests are absolutely tickled when it chimes. The swirling floral ornamentation is rendered so organically.
This clock was made in a time when you had highly trained specialists. There was specialist who made the clockwork mechanism. A specialist for the gilding. A specialist to paint the Roman numerals on the clock. A specialist for the bronze casting of the clock body. And I could go on and on. Craftsmanship of this quality is rare and I will be a little sad when this piece sells but I know whoever buys it will enjoy it as much as I have.
