These striking art pottery vessels in the Art … Read more An antique English Secessionist Ware vase pair from Minton's of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. These striking art pottery vessels in the Art Nouveau style were hand decorated with a rich polychrome Majolica (lead) glaze of vibrant sang-de-boeuf / oxblood red, clusters of blue and ivory circles resembling abstracted hydrangeas, and tube-lined (slip-trailing) wavy whiplash accents running from the rim to foot. Very good condition with a few nicks, scuffs and light scratches + typical crazing overall and small glaze skips and flakes at bases. Each vase bears a printed Minton's / LTD / NO. 1 mark underfoot and measures 9.5 in. height x 4 in. diameter (at widest point).

Minton's Secessionist Ware was named after the European avant-garde Vienna Secession movement. The highly ornamental range of earthenware art pottery featured distinctive bold glazes with textured tube-lining emphasizing highly-stylized and abstracted organic motifs. John William Wadsworth (1879-1955) created these designs under the art directorship of Léon Victor Solon (1873-1957), introducing the line in 1902. See less
