These were traditionally hand-turned, utilitarian training pieces made by local craftspeople or gymnasiums.
They originated in ancient India as training tools for wrestlers (pehlwans) and martial artists to build powerful upper bodies.
British colonists adopted the practice in the 19th century and introduced them to the West, where they became a staple of military drill training, physical education and even early Olympic competition.
Because the weight is offset (concentrated at the far end of the pin), swinging the clubs creates centrifugal force. This uniquely targets shoulder joint mobility & stability,
grip & forearm strength and requires constant control to keep the weight balanced through circular paths. It requires strict core stability to maintain posture while the weights rotate overhead.
Training with Indian clubs is often done in continuous, rhythmic sequences—almost like a martial arts flow. It promotes coordination, wrist flexibility, and balance without putting high-impact stress on the joints.
Whether used for functional fitness and mobility or displayed on a bookshelf as striking vintage decor, this set brings both history and character to any space.
