The chairs consist … Read more Immaculately restored set of 8 mahogany dining chairs by Brown Saltman, made in Southern California c. 1950s. The chairs consist of solid mahogany frames and Edelman Royal Hide leather with antiqued nailheads.

The seats rest at a slight decline, giving them a lounge chair feel in a more compact form factor. With 2" high density foam cushions, they are about as comfortable as dining chairs can get.

Neutral off-white leather draws attention to the mahogany, a wood known for its rich tonal variation and natural chatoyance. Nailhead detailing outlines the backrests, providing just enough visual punctuation to define their form without distracting from the natural beauty of the wood.

Over the years we have had several sets of the side chairs—designed by John Keal—in both marked and unmarked variations. Brown Saltman affixed upholstery tags to the underside of the seats at the time of manufacture. These were often lost during reupholstery, as was the case with this set. The lesser seen armchairs are attributed to Paul Laszlo. Both men designed a number of iconic pieces for Brown Saltman throughout the 1940s and 1950s.

Each chair in the set has been expertly restored for another generation of use.
