Antique Pennsylvania Folk Art Set of 6 Paint Decorated Arrow-Back Windsor Chairs, Circa 1850s
A wonderful set of six original paint-decorated Windsor chairs from Pennsylvania, likely Lancaster or Lebanon County, circa 1840-1860. Each chair features a flat tablet crest rail hand-painted with a folk art fruit and foliage motif, flanked by gold stenciled geometric designs, set above graceful arrow-shaped spindles — a hallmark of Pennsylvania German country furniture making.
The chairs retain their original brown base paint, with gold and black striping detailing the seats, crests, and turned legs, and stenciled floral motifs along the seat fronts. This kind of fully original, un-refinished paint decoration on a complete set of six is genuinely hard to find — most surviving examples have been stripped or repainted over the last century and a half.
Sturdy and fully useable, with wear that is honest and consistent with nearly 175 years of age and use. A rare opportunity to bring a complete set of authentic Pennsylvania folk art seating into a farmhouse, country kitchen, or dining room.
