Manufactured in Fenton, Staffordshire, England circa 1895, this rare 9.5-inch deep dinnerware plate seamlessly blends timeless botanical artistry with a refined Grandmillennial or English cottage aesthetic. Winkle & Co., a late 19th-century Staffordshire firm highly revered for their durable semi-porcelain bodies and exceptionally fluid transfer printing. The "Sprays" pattern captures the romantic essence of the British arts and crafts movement, moving away from rigid Victorian symmetry in favor of an organic, drifting wild-botanical arrangement. The deep cobalt blue pigment was applied via a delicate paper tissue transfer process before the glaze firing, which allowed the vibrant inks to softly bleed into the surrounding vitrified white clay—a signature characteristic highly prized by collectors of antique Flow Blue and traditional English ironstone dinnerware.

The vitrified bodies are entirely free from chips, cracks, hairline fractures, or ground-down rim restorations. Remarkably for semi-porcelain of this lineage, the high-gloss clear glaze remains glass-smooth and entirely free from the fine web of glaze crazing typically expected on earthenware of this age. Under strict direct studio lighting, a discerning eye can locate tiny, historic kiln-stilt pinholes in the center of the glazed foot ring. These are not flaws or post-production damage; they are the highly coveted, authentic fingerprints of late-Victorian craftsmanship, left behind when the potter separated the stacked plates from their ceramic kiln tripods over a century ago. Modern reproductions are fired flat on automated conveyor belts and lack these historical markers. The authentic blue-stamped maker’s marks are fully intact and legible on the undersides. less
