The prunus blossom aka cherry blossom motif is a classic Chinese porcelain design, admired for its crisp blue-and-white palette and timeless decorative quality. This Yuhuchunping-shaped vase has a deep navy background from which the flowering prunus branches rise from the foot ring base, on both sides of the vase, and wrap around the sides, extending upward to the slender neck flanked by elegant dragon handles. This mid 20th-century beauty measures 11¾” x 7” x 4½” H/W/D and weighs 3 lbs. 11 oz. It is in excellent condition with minimal, if any age-appropriate wear. A single lowercase “m” makers mark can be found on the underside, a mark which is unknown to us. We believe this vase to be a Hong Kong export vase brought home to the United States from travels to Asia by the previous owner. I photographed the vase in the round to show all sides and the nuances of the patterns and coloring throughout.

Of note, the Yuhuchunping (pear-shape) vase first appeared in the temples of the Tang dynasty (608–917 AD) as a holy water vase. The shape was then popularized during the Song dynasty and was mainly used as a wine vessel. Later, the refined shape became a classical vase style and continues to be copied as a model. It is characterized by a flared mouth, a straight neck that broadens at the ends and a bottom-heavy body with a short foot ring.

The graceful shape and elegant artistry of Chinese hand-painting makes this vase a striking sculptural piece to adorn a bookshelf or mantel, where its rich colors and serene imagery can be appreciated.
